The Mascara Diaries

I have an addiction…and it’s mascara. I try to avoid spending too much on makeup, but alas, I cannot with mascara. I think long lashes always look good… even with minimal makeup. Every day I wear the same thing:  under-eye concealer, bronzer, blush and MASCARA—so I think it’s perfectly normal to spend a little extra on basics [this is my reasoning, you know YOLO].  I have gone thru a lot of brands—Dior, Givenchy, Shiseido, Benefit, YSL… blah blah blah. They are generally good, but haven't done it for me. I need a lightweight formula that curls, lengthens, doesn’t smudge and comes off relatively easily (I have lots of needs]. My go-to for the last couple of years has been my Fiberwig [post to come]. It’s perfect for day… for night…for yoga…for channel surfing. But I digress. I recently received a small sample of Laura Mercier’s Full Blown Volume Lash Building mascara, and I have to say… I like it! It is not the fiber formula I tend to stick with, but it’s versatile and what I’m looking for.  I haven’t yet reached Twiggy-status… but I’m happy for now!

Birthday Cake for a Special Lady

I spent a long weekend home in New Jersey to celebrate my mom’s birthday [I tend to go home for birthdays, including mine]. Per the usual, I hit up a couple of malls and made some really important/not-so-important purchasing decisions and of course, cooked. Follow by a bout of my mom feeding me leftovers, I made tacos for everyone on Sunday and started on the birthday cake. My mom is definitely a dessert connoisseur so I had to make something that would impress…so I opted for this layered strawberry shortcake—something light for springtime [the chiffon cake really made the difference]. A few tweaks…I am a bit weary of cutting/slicing layers, so I just did two layers using two 9” cake pans. Also, I went ahead and macerated the strawberries using some sugar and lemon juice. My mom was super pleased with the finished product—and I must say—for someone who has frequent meltdowns when baking, this was a cinch!

By the way, how cute is the electric beater? My mom kept the one she got in the 80s and it still works like a charm!

Spring Cleaning

I have lived in my townhouse for a little over 2 years, but I still feel at times that I have just moved in because I lack organization in some parts of the house.  I love my kitchen and I have a lot of drawer and cabinet space, but it seems that most of my stuff is just thrown in there.  I bought these drawer organizers that you can find at The Container Store.  After organizing my drawers, I will go on to organize my pantry.  Because of the warm weather approaching, storing your dried goods in canisters is always a good idea because sometimes you can find pantry moths or the food could just get easily spoiled and go bad.  I bought these also from The Container store, where I plan to store items such as flour, sugar, brown sugar, pasta, cereal, etc.  I am hoping to finish this part of my spring cleaning by the end of this month, so that I can move on to other parts of the house.  Wish me luck!

My inspiration.  Hopefully mine could look something like this...

Elephants and Vintage

Elephants and Vintage. Those are two of my favorite things. Something about elephants melt my heart and I'm a little obsessed with them. Vintage is something I love because its not all about the piece itself, its how you find it, what it means to you, and the fact no one else will have it! Here are some of my favorite vintage rings. Soon I will share some of my secrets about Vintage shopping... You can find a lot of interesting pieces without spending a fortune!
